Navigating the Amalfi Coast on a Budget: 10 Expert Secrets
Who says the Italian Riviera has to break the bank? From staying in Salerno to hiking the Path of the Gods, here is how to enjoy a luxury destination on a backpacker's budget.
The Amalfi Coast is synonymous with luxury, yachts, and $30 cocktails. But beyond the glitz of Positano, there is an authentic, affordable side to this Mediterranean paradise. Here’s how to live the 'Dolce Vita' for less.
1. Base Yourself in Salerno or Vietri sul Mare

Skip the $500/night hotels in Positano. Salerno, at the eastern end of the coast, offers authentic Italian charm and hotels at a third of the price. Plus, it has a direct high-speed train link to Rome, making it the most convenient and affordable gateway.
2. Master the SITA Bus and TravelMar Ferry
Private transfers can cost $150+, but the SITA bus costs just a few Euros. For the best views without the yacht price tag, take the TravelMar ferry between towns. It’s the best way to see the coastline from the water for about $10-$15.
3. Hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

The most spectacular views on the coast don't cost a cent. This 5-mile hike between Bomerano and Nocelle offers breathtaking panoramas of the sea and the cliffs. It's completely free and far more rewarding than any luxury boat tour.
4. Visit in the 'Sweet Spot' Shoulder Season
Avoid July and August at all costs. Instead, visit in May or late September. The weather is still warm, the lemon trees are in bloom, and accommodation prices drop by 30-50% compared to the peak summer madness.
5. Find the 'Spiaggia Libera' (Public Beaches)

Beach clubs can charge up to €50 for a sunbed. Look for signs that say 'Spiaggia Libera'—these are public sections of the beach where you can lay your towel for free. Most towns have at least one, usually tucked to the side of the fancy ports.
6. Lunch is Your Best Friend
Dinner prices in Italy are significantly higher than lunch. Eat your main meal at mid-day when restaurants offer 'Menu del Giorno' (menu of the day) or 'Tavola Calda' (hot table) options for a fraction of the evening price.
7. Shop at the Local 'Salumeria'

Instead of a sit-down meal, go to a local deli (Salumeria). Ask them to make you a panino with fresh buffalo mozzarella, local tomatoes, and prosciutto. It’s the ultimate high-quality meal for about €6, perfect for a picnic with a view.
8. Explore the Under-the-Radar Towns
Positano and Amalfi are the stars, but Minori, Maiori, and Cetara are the soul. These towns are more level (fewer stairs!), more authentic, and much friendlier on the wallet. Cetara is world-famous for its anchovies—try them at a local trattoria!
9. Drink the Tap Water (NASONE)
Stop buying plastic bottles of water. Italy has thousands of public fountains called 'Nasone' that provide crystal clear, ice-cold mountain water for free. Carry a reusable bottle and refill as you go—you’ll save money and the planet.
10. The Limoncello Rule

Buy your lemon products in the smaller shops away from the main tourist strips. Often, the producers inland will sell their Limoncello for half the price of the fancy gift shops in Positano. It’s the same liquid gold, just without the markup.
